VCAA Study Design In this area of study students explore a range of existing visual communications in the communication, environmental and industrial design fields. The focus of each design field is: • communication – the design and presentation of visual information to convey ideas and concepts • environmental – the design and presentation of visual information for built/constructed environments • industrial – the design and presentation of visual information for manufactured products. Students analyse how design elements, design principles, methods, media and materials are used in visual communications in these fields to achieve particular purposes for targeted audiences.
Outcome 1 Part 1 Choose either option 1 or option 2 from the handouts
Option 1 Using the advertisement on the page, analyse the use of design elements and principles as well as the use of media and methods, and identify the purpose, context and target audience
Option 2 Using the three different images/advertisements on the page, analyse the use of design elements and principles as well as the use of media and methods, and identify the purpose, context and target audience (1) Communication Design, (2) Environmental Design, (3) Industrial Design. DESIGN FIELDS AND COMPONENTS OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION Fields of practice explored in this study include Communication Design, Environmental Design and Industrial Design. Communication Design – presents visual information for communication purposes Includes Graphic Design, Information Design, Digital and Web Design, Advertising, Print Publication/Book Illustration and Typographic Design, Package/surface Design and Logo Design and Brand Identity. Environmental Design – presents visual information to communicate information about built/constructed environments. Includes Architectural Design, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Set Design and Exhibition/Display Design. Industrial Design – presents visual information to communicate information about objects and products. Includes Engineering Design, Product Design, Furniture and Fashion Design.
Using the Analysis Guide below, The following must be addressed for each of your chosen VC. Comprehensive and perceptive analysis of the features, purposes, contexts and audience/s of selected existing visual communications. Insightful evaluation of how materials, methods, media, design elements and principles are applied to convey information in existing visual communications. Highly developed evidence that effectively details the connections between existing visual communications and student work. Highly effective use of terminology.(200 words each) Part 1 to be completed during orientation or over the holidays -must be completed by first lesson back Sketchbook layout – A3 20 Page Page 1 Leave blank Page 2,3,4 Each example pasted in with analysis (200 words each).
Outcome 1 Part 2 and 3 Create three visual communication design processes Option 1 Create three visual communications exploring each of the design fields
Industrial: Create a third-angle orthogonal drawing of a stove applying correct use of symbols, labels and dimensions
Environmental: Create a rendered interior perspective drawing of the stove in the context of a contemporary kitchen.
Communication: Redesign the layout of the advertisement to create an appropriate design for application on a large scale billboard.
Option 2 Create three visual communications exploring each of the design fields
Environmental: Create a floor plan and interior elevations for a sleeping compartments on a train.
Industrial: Create a rendered isometric and third-angle orthogonal drawing of the Dyson fan.
Communication: Redesign the layout and content of the brochure to appeal to a different audience.
Highly developed skills and accurate use of drawing methods and conventions to visualise ideas and concepts and to create visual communications. Highly effective selection and consistent application of design elements and principles, methods, materials and media to create visual communication for specific purposes, audiences and contexts. Comprehensive knowledge and highly developed skills in the use of type, image and digital applications appropriate to specific visual communications.
